Claude Certified Architect: Foundations vs Professional

They're two separate exams, and neither is required before the other. Foundations (official code CCAR-F, often searched as CCAF) is a 60-question, scenario-based exam for architects who build production applications with Claude, at $125. Professional (official code CCAR-P) is the advanced credential: 63 questions, $175, aimed at mid-level and senior architects and "not intended for entry-level developers". People search for it as CCAP, but Anthropic doesn't use that code. If you build with Claude hands-on but are earlier in your architecture career, start with Foundations.

The fee shown at checkout reflects any discount that applies to your organization's partner tier. Both exams are reached through the Claude Partner Network (Anthropic's announcement). Candidates must be 18 or older and have a government ID and a company email. Who can take the exam explains how access works.

What Foundations tests

The guide describes its candidate as "a solution architect who designs and implements production applications with Claude", who typically has six months or more of building with the Claude API, the Agent SDK, Claude Code and MCP. It's a hands-on exam about Claude's own tools, built on five weighted areas:

AreaWeight
Agentic Architecture & Orchestration27%
Tool Design & MCP Integration18%
Claude Code Configuration & Workflows20%
Prompt Engineering & Structured Output20%
Context Management & Reliability15%

The exam is scenario-based. You get four scenarios drawn at random from a pool of six, so preparing for one favourite project won't cover you. The questions reward design judgment over memorized parameters. The full CCA-F exam guide has the format and rules, the exam task pages break each area into what's tested, and how the exam is scored explains the 720.

What Professional covers

Professional moves up a level, from building a system well to owning how Claude fits across an organization. Its guide names mid-level and senior solution architects, AI/ML engineers, tech leads and senior engineers as the audience. It has seven areas:

AreaWeight
Solution Design & Architecture17%
Claude Models, Prompting & Context Engineering13%
Integration19%
Evaluation, Testing & Optimization16%
Governance, Safety & Risk Management14%
Stakeholder Communication & Lifecycle Management14%
Developer Productivity & Operational Enablement7%

Integration is the largest single area at 19%, and governance and stakeholder work get 14% each. Those questions are about risk, sign-off and running a system after launch, not only about code. Every question is multiple-choice or multiple-response, and the guide's sample items are standalone rather than built on scenarios.

The credential is valid for 12 months. If you don't pass, retakes open after 14 days, then 30, then 90, with up to four attempts in a rolling 12 months. The guide doesn't publish the number of unscored questions or the languages offered. Its date is "Effective July 2026", and it gives no separate launch date.

Which to take first

Either one. Anthropic sets no mandatory prerequisites for Professional, and Foundations isn't required first. Professional's recommended experience is guidance, not a gate.

Start with Foundations if:

  • You build with Claude but have less than three years of architecture behind you. Professional's recommended experience assumes that background, and its guide says it isn't meant for entry-level developers.
  • Your daily work is inside Claude's tools. Agents, MCP servers, Claude Code setup and structured output are the core of Foundations. Professional puts more of its weight on governance, evaluation and stakeholders.
  • You'd rather your first attempt be the cheaper one. It's $125 against $175, before any partner-tier discount.

Go straight to Professional if you already meet its recommended experience and your role includes governance, risk and stakeholder work, for example a tech lead who signs off designs.

Timing matters too. If you plan to sit Professional around December 7, 2026, confirm which version of the content you'll get, and study from the guide that applies on your exam date.

Two mistakes to avoid

  • Buying prep for the wrong exam. Check a course's blueprint before you pay. Five areas led by Agentic Architecture & Orchestration at 27% means Foundations. Seven areas including governance and stakeholder communication means Professional. CCA Prep Studio covers Foundations.
  • Quoting a wrong code. CCAF and CCAP are only search terms. On a registration form, a support ticket or a résumé, use the full title with the official code: Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCAR-F) or Claude Certified Architect – Professional (CCAR-P). A wrong spelling such as "Cloud Certified Architect" can also send you to the wrong place. Foundations has its own naming tangle; here's why Foundations has three names.
